Emerald and Diamond Brooch

Frank Hall

The world's most expensive emerald and diamond brooch sold for $8.7 ml. This 37 carat emerald is from the Muzo, Columbian mine. In 1960 Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan commissioned Cartier to set the emerald in a brooch with 20 marquise cut diamonds for his wife, British socialite Nina Dyer. Dyer auctioned the emerald at Christie's in Geneva to raise money for animal welfare in 1969. It was bought by jeweller Van Cleef and Arpels and then passed several years later to Harry Winston in the US. Elizabeth Taylor received if from Richard Burton as a wedding gift. It has now been sold again at Christies, Geneva as the most expensive green stone in the world.
